Introduction: Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness. It is a prevalent disease worldwide, affecting ∼70 million people and expected to reach up to 112 million by 2040. Purpose: The aim of this study is to describe the implementation and initial experience of a telemedicine program to monitor glaucoma and glaucoma suspect patients in a large, integrated health care system during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A retrospective chart review of established glaucoma or glaucoma suspect patients who participated in a telemedicine evaluation at the ophthalmic center of a large, Colombian health care system between June 2020 and April 2023 was conducted. Clinical and sociodemographic variables were analyzed. Generated clinical orders for additional testing, surgical procedures, follow-ups, and referrals, as well as changes in medical treatment, were evaluated. Results: A total of 11,034 telemedicine consults were included. The mean ± standard deviation age of this group was 63 ± 17.2 years and 67% were female. Of the patients who attended teleconsults, 49% were glaucoma suspects and 38.5% were followed with a diagnosis of open-angle glaucoma. After the consult, 25% of patients were referred to a glaucoma specialist, 40% had additional testing ordered, and 8% had a surgical procedure ordered, mainly laser iridotomy (409 cases). Almost a third of patients returned for subsequent telemedicine visits after the initial encounter. Despite some technical difficulties, 99.8% of patients attended and completed their scheduled telemedicine appointments. Conclusions: A telemedicine program aimed to monitor established glaucoma patients can be successfully implemented. Established patients within an integrated health care system have high adherence to the virtual model. Further research by health care institutions and government agencies will be key to expand coverage to additional populations. Clinical Trial Registration Number: CEIFUS 1026-24.

The study of the Heteroptera (Hemiptera) fauna of the El Impenetrable National Park, resulted in an inventory composed of: Alydidae (2 spp.), Aradidae (1 sp.), Belostomatidae (5 spp.), Berytidae (1 sp.), Blissidae (1 sp.), Coreidae (11 spp.), Corixidae (2 spp.), Geocoridae (1 sp.), Gerridae (1 sp.), Hebridae (1 sp.), Largidae (4 spp.), Lygaeidae (5 spp.), Miridae (17 spp.), Nabidae (1 sp.), Notonectidae (1 sp.), Oxycarenidae (1 sp.), Pachygronthidae (1 sp.), Pachynomidae (2 spp.), Pentatomidae (16 spp.), Pleidae (1 sp.), Pyrrhocoridae (1 sp.), Reduviidae (30 spp.), Rhopalidae (5 spp.), Rhyparochromidae (12 spp.), Saldidae (1 sp.), Scutelleridae (2 spp.), Tingidae (1 sp.), and Veliidae (1 sp.). These findings include six new records for the Argentinean fauna: Prytanes foedus (Stl), Saldula pallipes (Fabricius), Camirus brevilinea (Walker), Atopozelus opsimus Elkins, Doldina bicarinata Stl, Rocconota sextuberculata St and 39 new records for Chaco Province.

When microbial communities form, their composition is shaped by selective pressures imposed by the environment. Can we predict which communities will assemble under different environmental conditions? Here, we hypothesize that quantitative similarities in metabolic traits across metabolically similar environments lead to predictable similarities in community composition. To that end, we measured the growth rate and by-product profile of a library of proteobacterial strains in a large number of single nutrient environments. We found that growth rates and secretion profiles were positively correlated across environments when the supplied substrate was metabolically similar. By analyzing hundreds of in-vitro communities experimentally assembled in an array of different synthetic environments, we then show that metabolically similar substrates select for taxonomically similar communities. These findings lead us to propose and then validate a comparative approach for quantitatively predicting the effects of novel substrates on the composition of complex microbial consortia.

Targeted protein degradation has emerged as an alternative therapy against cancer, offering several advantages over traditional inhibitors. The new degrader drugs provide different therapeutic strategies: they could cross the phospholipid bilayer membrane by the addition of specific moieties to extracellular proteins. On the other hand, they could efficiently improve the degradation process by the generation of a ternary complex structure of an E3 ligase. Herein, we review the current trends in the use of TAC-based technologies (TACnologies), such as PROteolysis TArgeting Chimeras (PROTAC), PHOtochemically TArgeting Chimeras (PHOTAC), CLIck-formed Proteolysis TArgeting Chimeras (CLIPTAC), AUtophagy TArgeting Chimeras (AUTAC), AuTophagosome TEthering Compounds (ATTEC), LYsosome-TArgeting Chimeras (LYTAC), and DeUBiquitinase TArgeting Chimeras (DUBTAC), in experimental development and their progress towards clinical applications.

BACKGROUND: After the COVID-19 pandemic, society has become more aware of the importance of some basic hygienic habits to avoid exposure to pathogens transmitted via hands. Given that a high frequency of touching mucous membranes can lead to a high risk of infection, it is essential to establish strategies to reduce this behavior as a preventive measure against contagion. This risk can be extrapolated to a multitude of health scenarios and transmission of many infectious diseases. #RedPingüiNO was designed as an intervention to prevent the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and other pathogens through the reduction of facial self-touches by thoughtfully engaging participants in a serious game. OBJECTIVE: Facial self-touches should be understood as behaviors of limited control and awareness, used to regulate situations of cognitive and emotional demands, or as part of nonverbal communication. The objective of this study was to ensure that participants become aware of and reduce these behaviors through a game of self-perception. METHODS: The quasi-experimental intervention was applied to 103 healthy university students selected by convenience sampling and put into practice for 2 weeks, with 1 control group (n=24, 23.3%) and 2 experimental groups (experimental group with no additional social reinforcement interventions: n=36, 35%; experimental group with additional social reinforcement interventions: n=43, 41.7%). The objective was to improve knowledge and perception and reduce facial self-touches to prevent exposure to pathogens transmitted via hands not only in health multihazard scenarios but also in ordinary circumstances. The ad hoc instrument used to analyze the experience consisted of 43 items and was valid and reliable for the purpose of this study. The items were divided into 5 blocks extracted from the theoretical framework: sociological issues (1-5); hygiene habits (6-13); risk awareness (14-19); strategies for not touching the face (20-26); and questions after the intervention (27-42), designed as a postintervention tool assessing the game experience. Validation of the content was achieved through assessment by 12 expert referees. External validation was performed using a test-retest procedure, and reliability was verified using the Spearman correlation. RESULTS: The results of the ad hoc questionnaire, which were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and McNemar index to identify significant differences between test and retest for a 95% CI, showed that facial self-touches were reduced (item 20, P<.001; item 26, P=.04), and awareness of this spontaneous behavior and its triggers increased (item 15; P=.007). The results were reinforced by qualitative findings from the daily logs. CONCLUSIONS: The intervention exhibited a greater effect from sharing the game, with interactions between people; however, in both cases, it was helpful in reducing facial self-touches. In summary, this game is suitable for reducing facial self-touches, and owing to its free availability and design, it can be adapted to various contexts.

OBJECTIVES: Underlying immunodeficiency has been associated with worse clinical presentation and increased mortality in patients with COVID-19. We evaluated the mortality of solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients (SOTR) hospitalized in Spain due to COVID-19. METHODS: Nationwide, retrospective, observational analysis of all adults hospitalized because of COVID-19 in Spain during 2020. Stratification was made according to SOT status. The National Registry of Hospital Discharges was used, using the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision coding list. RESULTS: Of the 117,694 adults hospitalized during this period, 491 were SOTR: kidney 390 (79.4%), liver 59 (12%), lung 27 (5.5%), and heart 19 (3.9%). Overall, the mortality of SOTR was 13.8%. After adjustment for baseline characteristics, SOTR was not associated with higher mortality risk (odds ratio [OR] = 0.79, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.60-1.03). However, lung transplantation was an independent factor related to mortality (OR = 3.26, 95% CI 1.33-7.43), while kidney, liver, and heart transplantation were not. Being a lung transplant recipient was the strongest prognostic factor in SOT patients (OR = 5.12, 95% CI 1.88-13.98). CONCLUSION: This nationwide study supports that the COVID-19 mortality rate in SOTR in Spain during 2020 did not differ from the general population, except for lung transplant recipients, who presented worse outcomes. Efforts should be focused on the optimal management of lung transplant recipients with COVID-19.

INTRODUCTION: Mortality from candidemia is higher in elderly population than in younger patients, which may be related to suboptimal management. The aim of the present study is to evaluate adherence to the recommendations for the clinical management of candidemia in a population over 75 years before and after implementing specific training. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We recorded retrospectively data from candidemia episodes in elderly patients during two periods of time: 2010-2015 years (before training) and 2017-2022 years (after training), as well as adherence to the recommendations of the clinical practice guidelines, mortality and consultation to infectious disease specialists. RESULTS: Forty-five episodes of candidemia were recorded in the first period and 29 episodes in the second period. A better compliance to the recommendations of the clinical practice guidelines was observed in the second period: echocardiogram performance (75.9% vs. 48.9% p = .021), fundoscopy (65.5% vs. 44.4% p = .076), follow-up blood cultures (72.4% vs. 42.2% p = .011), removal of central venous catheter (80% vs. 52.9% p = .080) and adequate antifungal treatment (82.6% vs. 52.6% p = .018). A trend towards lower mortality was observed during the second period (27.6% vs. 44.4% p = .144). CONCLUSION: The improvement of knowledge of clinical guidelines on candidemia and the participation of infectious disease specialists may increase the quality of care in elderly patients with candidemia. It would be necessary to enlarge the sample size to evaluate the real impact of this intervention on mortality.

A description is provided of the crocodile remains that were found during an excavation carried out in 2019 at Qubbat al-Hawa (Aswan, Egypt). The material consists of five more or less complete bodies and five heads that were in varying states of preservation and completeness. The absence of resin, which was apparently not used during the preparation of the mummies, and the almost complete loss of linen bandages, due to insect damage, allowed a detailed morphological and osteometric description of the remains. Attention was focused on the general state of preservation of the crocodiles, the completeness of their skeletons and skulls, the presence of cut or other marks that could indicate the cause of death, and the processing of the carcasses. Moreover, the possible provenance of the crocodiles, the methods of capture and killing of the animals and their possible chronological attribution are discussed. It is concluded that the manner in which these specimens were prepared, as well as the variation observed in the type of 'final product', are unlike any other crocodile material described so far. The preparation method suggests a pre-Ptolemaic date for the deposit. The morphological and metrical features indicate that both Crocodylus niloticus and the recently resurrected species Crocodylus suchus are present among these individuals that range from 1.8 to 3.5 m in length.

Fundamentos: Una óptima formación científica en conocimientos en alimentación, nutrición y salud,fundamentado en el patrón de la dieta mediterránea, favorece su promoción y la prevención de enfermedades.Este hecho tiene una premisa fundamental en los grados cuyo futuro profesional apliquen y enseñen estosconocimientos sobre la población infantil y juvenil. Por ello, el objetivo de este estudio fue promocionar, através aprendizaje cooperativo, hábitos de alimentación y nutrición saludable y sostenible en jóvenesuniversitarios.Métodos: A través de un estudio cuasi-experimental y longitudinal, se analizó de forma estadística descriptivae inferencial, el conocimiento sobre el Desayuno Saludable y la Adhesión a la dieta mediterránea tras unaintervención cooperativa en futuros docentes pertenecientes a la Universidad de Extremadura.Resultados: Se aprecia un incremento del conocimiento científico con un aumento de los aciertos del 80% al100% del cuestionario, y más en particular en el aprendizaje del Desayuno Saludable, lo cual no solo revierteen un aumento de su rendimiento del aprendizaje científico sino también en promoción de la salud. Además,no se apreciaron diferencias entre el sexo de los participantes.Conclusiones: Resulta evidente que los programas de intervenciones científicas a través de dinámicascooperativas resultan efectivos en el aprendizaje de conocimientos sobre hábitos saludables y sostenibles enalimentación y nutrición, en estudiantes universitarios. Background: An optimal scientific training in food, nutrition and health knowledge, based on theMediterranean Diet pattern, contributes to its promotion and disease prevention. This fact has a fundamentalpremise in the degrees whose future professionals apply and teach this knowledge on children and youngpeople. Therefore, the aim of this study was to promote, through cooperative learning, healthy and sustainableeating and nutrition habits in young university students.Methods: Through a quasi-experimental and longitudinal study, descriptive and inferential statistics were usedto analyze the particular knowledge of the Healthy Breakfast and Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet after acooperative intervention in future teachers belonging to the University of Extremadura.Results: There was an increase in scientific knowledge with a success rate of 80% to 100% of the questionnaire,and more particularly in the learning of the Healthy Breakfast, which not only results in an increase in theirperformance in scientific learning but also in health promotion. In addition, no differences were observedbetween the sex of the participants.Conclusions: It is evident that scientific intervention programs through cooperative dynamics are satisfactoryin the learning of knowledge about healthy and sustainable habits in food and nutrition, in university students. Abstract: Introduction: Among the patients infected with SARS-CoV-2, 14.6% were admitted to intensive care unit. this 29 to 75% required invasive mechanical ventilation with an associated mortality of 12 to 81%. Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is the most serious form of presentation. The pathophysiology of ARDS secondary to SARS-CoV-2 differs from conventional causes. It presents dysregulation in hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction, secondary acute pulmonary hypertension and microthrombotic phenomena. The development of refractory severe hypoxemia (PaO2 < 60 mmHg or PaO2/FiO2 < 100 mmHg, with FiO2 80 to 100%, with PEEP > 10 to 20 cmH2O for at least 10 to 12 hours) constitutes the scenario of maximum severity with an associated mortality of 71 to 94%. The use of rescue strategies that impact on the specific pathophysiology of this entity such as the use of inhaled nitric oxide, neuromuscular blockade and prone ventilation have emerged as therapeutic targets of interest. Protective mechanical ventilation (plateau pressure [Pplat] < 27 cmH2O and driving pressure [DP] < 15 cmH2O) continues to be the cornerstone of the management. Objectives: To determine whether there is an association between the use of inhaled nitric oxide and prone ventilation with ventilatory mechanics in patients with severe refractory hypoxemia secondary to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Material and methods: A historical, retrospective, descriptive, comparative and retrolective cohort study was carried out. Data from the records of patients admitted to the Respiratory ICU of the ABC Medical Center with a diagnosis of ARDS secondary to SARS-CoV-2 infection who required iNO and mechanical ventilation in prone from April 1 to December 31, 2020 were analyzed. A univariate analysis was performed, the statistical analysis was performed in SPSS v 21, measures of trend, dispersion were analyzed as well as the analysis of risk factors with Student's t test and χ2. Results: A total of 108 patients were analyzed, of which 54 received iNO, neuromuscular blockade and prone and 54 only neuromuscular blockade and prone ventilation. 81.5% (n = 88) were men. The most common comorbidity was diabetes mellitus in 51.9% (n = 56). The increase in oxygenation (delta PaO2/FiO2) was with a median of 31.9 ± 15.2 mmHg in the iNO group and 52.9 ± 16.74 mmHg in the control group (p = 0.001). The postintervention Pplat in the iNO group was 26.3 ± 3 and 34.5 ± 1.9 cmH2O in the control group (p = 0.792). The preintervention DP in the iNO group was 17.2 ± 3.9 and 13.4 ± 2.8 cmH2O in control group vs 13.1 ± 1.29 and 12 ± 1.92 cmH2O after the intervention (p = 0.001). Conclusions: The use of iNO in patients with severe hypoxemia refractory to prone ventilation and neuromuscular blockade did not produce a statistically significant improvement in oxygenation, however it allowed to reprogram the ventilatory support to keep the patient in goals of alveolar protection.


Resumo: Introdução: 14.6% dos pacientes infectados com SARS-CoV-2 são internados em terapia intensiva. Destes, 29 a 75% necessitam de ventilação mecânica invasiva com mortalidade associada de 12 a 81%. A síndrome do desconforto respiratório agudo (SDRA) é a forma mais grave de apresentação. A fisiopatologia da SDRA secundária ao SARS-CoV-2 difere das causas convencionais. Apresenta desregulação na vasoconstrição pulmonar hipóxica, hipertensão pulmonar aguda secundária e fenômenos microtrombóticos. O desenvolvimento de hipoxemia grave refratária (PaO2 < 60 mmHg ou PaO2/FiO2 < 100 mmHg, com FiO2 de 80 a 100%, PEEP > 10 a 20 cmH2O por pelo menos 10 a 12 horas) constitui o cenário mais grave com mortalidade associada de 71 a 94%. O uso de estratégias de resgate que impactam na fisiopatologia específica dessa entidade, como o uso de óxido nítrico inalatório (NOi), bloqueio neuromuscular e ventilação prona, surgiram como alvos terapêuticos de interesse. A ventilação mecânica protetora (Pressão de Platô [PPLAT] < 27 cmH2O e Pressão de Condução [CP] < 15 cmH2O) continua sendo a base de seu manejo. Objetivo: Determinar se existe associação entre o uso de óxido nítrico inalatório e ventilação prona prolongada com mecânica ventilatória em pacientes com hipoxemia refratária grave secundária à infecção por SARS-CoV-2. Material e métodos: Realizou-se um estudo de coorte histórico, retrospectivo, descritivo, comparativo e retroletivo. Analisaram-se dados dos prontuários de pacientes internados na UTI Respiratória do Centro Médico ABC com diagnóstico de SDRA secundária à infecção por SARS-CoV-2 que necessitaram de óxido nítrico inalatório e ventilação mecânica prona no período de 1o de abril a 31 de dezembro de 2020. Realizou-se uma análise univariada , a análise estatística foi realizada no SPSS v 21, foram analisadas as medidas de tendência e dispersão, assim como a análise dos fatores de risco com teste t de Student e χ2. Resultados: Analisaram-se 108 pacientes, dos quais 54 receberam NOi, bloqueio neuromuscular e prono e 54 apenas bloqueio neuromuscular e ventilação prona. 81.5% (n = 88) eram homens. A comorbidade mais comum foi diabetes mellitus em 51.9% (n = 56). O aumento da oxigenação (Delta PaO2/FiO2) foi com mediana de 31.9 ± 15.2 mmHg no grupo NOi e 52.9 ± 16.74 mmHg no grupo controle (p = 0.001). A PPLAT após a intervenção no grupo NOi foi de 26.3 ± 3 e 34.5 ± 1.9 cmH2O no grupo controle (p = 0.792). A PC antes da intervenção no grupo NOi foi de 17.2 ± 3.9 e 13.4 ± 2.8 cmH2O no grupo controle vs 13.1 ± 1.29 e 12 ± 1.92 cmH2O após a intervenção (p = 0.001). Conclusões: O uso de NOi em pacientes com hipoxemia grave refratária à ventilação em pronação e bloqueio neuromuscular não produziu melhora estatisticamente significativa na oxigenação, porém permitiu que o suporte ventilatório fosse reprogramado para manter as metas de proteção alveolar do paciente.

PURPOSE: To evaluate Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) as a sepsis prognostic biomarker. METHODS: 203 septic patients admitted to the ICU. Analysis of RDW dynamics, hospital mortality discrimination ability and the added value when incorporated to the SOFA, LODS, SAPS-II and APACHE-II scores using the AUC-ROC. RESULTS: Non-survivors presented higher RDW values during the first week after ICU admission (p = 0.048). Only SOFA and RDW were independently associated with mortality when adjusted by Charlson, immunosuppression, nosocomial infection, NEWS2, SAPS-II, septic shock and haemoglobin (p < 0.05). After adjustment, AUC-ROC was 0.827, 0.822, 0.824, 0.834 and 0.812 for each model including admission, 24, 48 and 72-h and 7-days RDW, respectively. When added to the scores, 24-h RDW and admission RDW improved their discrimination ability (SOFA AUC-ROC = 0.772 vs 0.812 SOFA + admission RDW, p = 0.041; LODS AUC-ROC = 0.687 vs 0.710, p = 0.002; SAPS-II AUC-ROC = 0.734 vs 0.785, p = 0.021; APACHE-II AUC-ROC = 0.672 vs 0.755, p = 0.003). Admission RDW with SOFA presented the better discrimination ability for mortality. CONCLUSION: RDW is an independent prognostic marker of death in septic patients admitted in the ICU that improves SOFA, LODS, APACHE-II and SAPS-II discrimination ability. This parameter could be incorporated to the prognostic scores as a marker of systemic dysfunction and dysregulated inflammatory response.

Ungulate migrations are crucial for maintaining abundant populations and functional ecosystems. However, little is known about how or why migratory behaviour evolved in ungulates. To investigate the evolutionary origins of ungulate migration, we employed phylogenetic path analysis using a comprehensive species-level phylogeny of mammals. We found that 95 of 207 extant ungulate species are at least partially migratory, with migratory behaviour originating independently in 17 lineages. The evolution of migratory behaviour is associated with reliance on grass forage and living at higher latitudes wherein seasonal resource waves are most prevalent. Indeed, originations coincide with mid-Miocene cooling and the subsequent rise of C4 grasslands. Also, evolving migratory behaviour supported the evolution of larger bodies, allowing ungulates to exploit new ecological space. Reconstructions of migratory behaviour further revealed that seven of ten recently extinct species were probably migratory, suggesting that contemporary migrations are important models for understanding the ecology of the past.

Siphonophores (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) are abundant and diverse gelatinous predators in open-ocean ecosystems. Due to limited access to the midwater, little is known about the diets of most deep-dwelling gelatinous species, which constrains our understanding of food-web structure and nutrient flow in these vast ecosystems. Visual gut-content methods can rarely identify soft-bodied rapidly-digested prey, while observations from submersibles often overlook small prey items. These methods have been differentially applied to shallow and deep siphonophore taxa, confounding habitat and methodological biases. DNA metabarcoding can be used to assess both shallow and deep species' diets under a common methodological framework, since it can detect both small and gelatinous prey. We (1) further characterized the diets of open-ocean siphonophores using DNA metabarcoding, (2) compared the prey detected by visual and molecular methods to evaluate their technical biases, and (3) evaluated tentacle-based predictions of diet. To do this, we performed DNA metabarcoding analyses on the gut contents of 39 siphonophore species across depths to describe their diets, using six barcode regions along the 18S gene. Taxonomic identifications were assigned using public databases combined with local zooplankton sequences. We identified 55 unique prey items, including crustaceans, gelatinous animals, and fish across 47 siphonophore specimens in 24 species. We reported 29 novel predator-prey interactions, among them the first insights into the diets of nine siphonophore species, many of which were congruent with the dietary predictions based on tentilla morphology. Our analyses detected both small and gelatinous prey taxa underrepresented by visual methods in species from both shallow and deep habitats, indicating that siphonophores play similar trophic roles across depth habitats. We also reveal hidden links between siphonophores and filter-feeders near the base of the food web. This study expands our understanding of the ecological roles of siphonophores in the open ocean, their trophic roles within the 'jelly-web', and the importance of their diversity for nutrient flow and ecosystem functioning. Understanding these inconspicuous yet ubiquitous predator-prey interactions is critical to predict the impacts of climate change, overfishing, and conservation policies on oceanic ecosystems.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to analyze the mortality and characteristics of deceased patients with COVID-19 during the first year of the pandemic. METHODS: All admissions owing to COVID-19 at a tertiary hospital in Madrid were analyzed. Three waves were considered: March 2020 to June 2020, July 2020 to November 2020, and December 2020 to April 2021. RESULTS: A total of 3,676 patients were identified. Among inpatients, no differences regarding age, sex, length of admission, or mortality were found between the 3 waves (p >0.05). The overall mortality rate was 12.9%. Among deceased patients, the median age was 82 years and the median Charlson Comorbidity Index was 6. Considering the main predictors for mortality by COVID-19 (age, sex, and concomitant comorbidities), only patients with previous lung disease were more prevalent in the third period (p <0.01). Finally, higher intensive care unit admission rates, a lower rate of patients coming from nursing homes, and a lower rate of patients with dementia were noted in the third period (p <0.05) among deceased patients. CONCLUSION: One year after the onset of the pandemic, the mortality rate of hospitalized patients and the profile of non-survivors have not changed significantly. In the absence of vaccine benefits, advanced age and multiple pathologies are uniform characteristics of non-survivors.

This work analyses the existence of asymmetric effects on the subjective well-being of the population of different countries in response to changes in the levels of aggregate income. Microdata from the Eurobarometer and the World Values Survey are used for the period 2000-2019. This period includes several economic changes, among which are the strong expansion at the beginning of the century, the Great Recession, and the subsequent recovery. Our study includes several groups of countries. In the broadest case, the study comprises a group of 83 countries and analyses the issue both from a global perspective as well as focusing particular attention on European countries. These asymmetric effects of economic activity are in line with behavioural economics and previous literature and allow us to determine a macroeconomic aversion to losses. The results obtained support the existence of asymmetric effects of changes in aggregate income on subjective well-being, and show that losses generated in recessions require a far more vigorous recovery if they are to be compensated for, and that they might even have permanent effects. BACKGROUND It is unclear whether solid organ transplant (SOT) patients have more severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and worse outcome than the general population. MATERIAL AND METHODS We conducted a case-control study on 32 SOT recipients and 84 non-SOT controls matched for age and sex admitted for confirmed COVID-19. The primary endpoint was in-hospital all-cause mortality rate. Secondary endpoints included severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), use of high-flow oxygen therapy, and length of hospital stay. RESULTS The median (IQR) Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) at admission was significantly higher in SOT recipients (6 (3-8) vs 3 (2-4); P<0.01). Fever was less frequent in SOT recipients (78% vs 94%, P=0.01). SOT recipients had a higher median SaO2/FiO2 at admission (452 [443-462] vs 443 [419-452], P<0.01) and reached the worst SaO2/FiO2 value later during hospitalization 15 (10-21) vs 11 (9-14) days, P=0.01). Both groups had a similar severe ARDS rate during hospitalization (33% vs 28%) (p=0.59). There were no significant differences during hospitalization in terms of highest level of respiratory support needed, or length of hospital stay: 8.5 (5.5-21) vs 11.5 (6.5-16.5) days; P=0.34) in SOT recipients when compared to controls. In-hospital all-cause mortality rates were significantly higher in SOT recipients (21.9% vs 4.7%, P<0.01; OR 1.08; 95% CI 0.10-10.98), but among patients who died, median CCI was similar between groups (8 [6-8] vs 7 [6-8]). CONCLUSIONS In our experience, hospitalized SOT recipients for COVID-19 had higher in-hospital mortality compared to non-SOT patients, probably due to the greater number of underlying comorbidities, and not directly related to chronic immunosuppression.

La enfermedad diverticular de colon (EDC) no complicada sintomática (EDCNCS) es una patología con elevada prevalencia en nuestro medio que afecta de manera importante la calidad de vida de los pacientes que la padecen. Los cambios recientes en la comprensión de la historia natural de esta enfermedad y los avances tecnológicos y farmacológicos han incrementado sustancialmente las opciones disponibles tanto para su diagnóstico como para el tratamiento. Sin embargo, el consenso que existe en cuanto al uso de estas opciones es pobre y en algunas ocasiones carente de evidencia científica. El objetivo de esta revisión sistemática es esclarecer la evidencia científica existente y fundamentar la utilización de las diferentes opciones diagnósticas y terapéuticas en la EDCNCS, comparando las ventajas y desventajas entre estas, para sugerir finalmente un algoritmo diagnóstico-terapéutico para esta patología y al mismo tiempo proponer nuevas preguntas de investigación.(AU)


Symptomatic uncomplicated diverticular colon disease (SUDCD) is a highly prevalent disease in our setting, which significantly affects the quality of life of patients. Recent changes in understanding the natural history of this disease and technological and pharmacological advances have increased the available options for both diagnosis and treatment. However, consensus regarding the use of these options is scarce and sometimes lacks scientific evidence. The objective of this systematic review is to clarify the existing scientific evidence and analyse the use of the different diagnostic and therapeutic options for SUDCD, comparing their advantages and disadvantages, to finally suggest a diagnostic-therapeutic algorithm for this pathology and, at the same time, propose new research questions.(AU)

Inflorescence movements in response to natural gradients of sunlight are frequently observed in the plant kingdom and are suggested to contribute to reproductive success. Although the physiological and molecular bases of light-mediated tropisms in vegetative organs have been thoroughly investigated, the mechanisms that control inflorescence orientation in response to light gradients under natural conditions are not well understood. In this work, we have used a combination of laboratory and field experiments to investigate light-mediated re-orientation of Arabidopsis thaliana inflorescences. We show that inflorescence phototropism is promoted by photons in the UV and blue spectral range (≤500 nm) and depends on multiple photoreceptor families. Experiments under controlled conditions show that UVR8 is the main photoreceptor mediating the phototropic response to narrowband UV-B radiation, and phototropins and cryptochromes control the response to narrowband blue light. Interestingly, whereas phototropins mediate bending in response to low irradiances of blue, cryptochromes are the principal photoreceptors acting at high irradiances. Moreover, phototropins negatively regulate the action of cryptochromes at high irradiances of blue light. Experiments under natural field conditions demonstrate that cryptochromes are the principal photoreceptors acting in the promotion of the heliotropic response of inflorescences under full sunlight.

The northern acorn barnacle (Semibalanus balanoides) is a robust system to study the genetic basis of adaptations to highly heterogeneous environments. Adult barnacles may be exposed to highly dissimilar levels of thermal stress depending on where they settle in the intertidal (i.e., closer to the upper or lower tidal boundary). For instance, barnacles near the upper tidal limit experience episodic summer temperatures above recorded heat coma levels. This differential stress at the microhabitat level is also dependent on the aspect of sun exposure. In the present study, we used pool-seq approaches to conduct a genome wide screen for loci responding to intertidal zonation across the North Atlantic basin (Maine, Rhode Island, and Norway). Our analysis discovered 382 genomic regions containing SNPs which are consistently zonated (i.e., SNPs whose frequencies vary depending on their position in the rocky intertidal) across all surveyed habitats. Notably, most zonated SNPs are young and private to the North Atlantic. These regions show high levels of genetic differentiation across ecologically extreme microhabitats concomitant with elevated levels of genetic variation and Tajima's D, suggesting the action of non-neutral processes. Overall, these findings support the hypothesis that spatially heterogeneous selection is a general and repeatable feature for this species, and that natural selection can maintain functional genetic variation in heterogeneous environments.
